This happens to be a picture from one of the Board Member’s home. They reminisce: “This was taken at a time of tremendous difficulty - sleepless nights, more diagnoses or lack thereof for different things that were occurring in our child’s body; extreme financial and marital strain including contemplating divorce. This was my cherished flower pot. Everyday I marveled at the small pink flowers as it stood simply, and yet with such strength, beauty, complexity, and order. It was a striking visual of peace in the midst of the chaos in my life and home at that time. Then one day, it was swiped off the windowsill. All I could think of - as I stared at the broken pieces - was that it was the last beautiful thing in my home and it too was shattered. It had been a cloudy day, and as I stared at it knowing I had to sweep it up and move on from this simple mishap yet still grieving over something seemingly so simple, the sun began to shine on and seemingly through the broken pieces. The light rays may be explained by the dirtiness of my home and bouncing off those dust particles, but for me, it was Clarity, Absolute Joy, Confidence and Strength. God was with us. Christ was there even in and most especially in that brokenness. He alone radiates. He alone restores. He knew everything we were and are experiencing and going through, and has the greatest plans.”
This is a picture over the High Altar over St. John Cantius Church, Chicago IL. It is called the “Miracle of the Jug,” because one day as St. John Cantius - a teacher at a local university - walked along, a young woman fell and shattered her water jug. St. John Cantius simply stopped to help her pick up the pieces of the jar, and as he did the jar was miraculously restored. When the girl got home, the jar was even filled with sweet milk instead of water.
The woman’s name has been lost to history and rightly so, as we can all insert our name for hers. Hopefully someday, we will also be those that in helping others in small, simple ways, God uses to miraculously restore one another’s lives.
